I need help composing an email to my old boss?

I need help composing an email to my old boss, asking if he has any work at all. I want it to be friendly not formal as he was always like a friendly chatty person. But I haven’t spoken to him in about a year so it can’t be too casual.. I really have no idea what to write at all? Can you just write a suggestion that I can work on. Thanks
